Maximizing Potential: Integrating Strengths-Based Coaching in Family-Centered Intervention for Optimal Outcomes
This presentation will offer practical and evidence-based strategies to advance the knowledge and abilities of listening and spoken language professionals coaching families of children with hearing loss in early intervention settings. Specifically, participants will engage in learning about strengths-based coaching, an approach that builds on existing family strengths. During this interactive session, participants will examine tools and strategies designed to build highly effective parent-professional partnerships and engage in opportunities to apply new knowledge and strategies to transform practice in early intervention and improve outcomes for children and their families.
- Identify key components related to family centered practice with a focus on the strengths-based coaching model
- Define practical strengths-based coaching techniques to guide and coach families of children with hearing loss in an early intervention setting
- Describe at least 3 specific strategies parent coaching strategies to guide families to expand on existing strengths and build family capacity

Teresa H. Caraway, PhD., CCC-SLP, LSLS Cert. AVT, CEO of the Oberkotter Foundation, is leading the effort to help families ensure their children who are deaf or hard of hearing have opportunities to reach their full potential through listening and spoken language (LSL) as a foundation for literacy. She is the Founding CEO of Hearing First, and the Co-Founder and former Executive Co-Director of Hearts for Hearing. A LSLS Certified Auditory-Verbal Therapist, Dr. Caraway served as the founding President of the AG Bell Academy for Listening and Spoken Language and as a founding board member of the American Cochlear Implant Alliance. She has previously served as a Director of the Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, AG Bell Academy for Listening and Spoken Language, and Auditory-Verbal International. She has been recognized by her peers for outstanding clinical skills. A former Course Director for the Institute for Cochlear Implant Training (ICIT), Adjunct Faculty at Salus University, and Adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, Dr. Caraway is an international consultant and skillful workshop presenter on teaching spoken language through listening.

Kathryn Wilson is the Coaching and Mentoring Leader at Hearing First. Kathryn served as the Director of FIRST YEARS and as Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill, since 2008 - 2014. In that role, she was responsible for overseeing the online certificate program, including managing the significant mentoring component for participants earning their certificates. As Coaching and Mentoring Leader, Kathryn champions the mentoring and coaching opportunities, primarily through the use of distance technology.

Marge Edwards, M.S., CCC-SLP, LSLS Cert. AVT, Programs Leader of Hearing First, an educational endeavor of the Oberkotter Foundation. As a parent of two successful children with hearing loss and practicing as a Listening and Spoken Language specialist, Marge knows firsthand what is possible for children born with hearing loss today when families receive appropriate support. Marge has provided early intervention services to families and has offered professional training for the delivery of telepractice services to families of children with hearing loss. Marge is dedicated to assuring families of all children with hearing loss have the support they need to help their children reach their full potential.
