The Listening Project
The audience will see a short (35 minute) documentary interviewing young adults with hearing loss, now in their 30's, who talk about their experiences growing up with hearing loss. Newborn hearing screening was yet being performed. They were identified with hearing loss after parents were concerned about delays in language development. All had access to hearing aids when hearing loss was identified but those you received cochlear implants did not get to do so until they were in their late teens or older. All were in families who chose listening and spoken language. The film will help families and professionals understand both what is possible for children with hearing loss to accomplish, as well as some of the difficulties they experienced. Discussion and questions will take place after the film.
- Attendees will understand what it is like to grow up with HL
- Attendees will reconize issues which are difficulty for children with HL
- Attendees will recognize the value of learning to listen for children with HL

Jane Madell, Ph.D., is a leader in and known worldwide for her outstanding contributions to the field of audiology and pediatric hearing loss. She has been a Pediatric Audiologist for more than 50 years. Jane has contriubted to numerous text books and articles, presented at countless conferences, and been issued high awards for her work. She directed the Audiology program at the League for the Hard of Hearing for 21 years; was the Director of the Hearing and Learning Center and Co-Director of Cochlear Implant Center at Beth Israel Medical Center and New York Eye and Ear Infirmary for 15 years. Jane consults and lectures nationally and internationally on hearing loss in infants and children and assists in program development. She is a recipient of the Marion Downs Award for Excellence in Pediatric Audiology.

Irene is an Oscar-nominated, Emmy and Peabody Award-winning documentary filmmaker who has dedicated much of her career to telling stories about disability. The mother of a deaf son, and the daughter of two deaf parents, her Sundance Award-winning film HEAR AND NOW looked at receiving cochlear implants after a lifetime without access to intelligible sound. Her films are shown in theaters, at festivals and on television worldwide, and include Beware the Slenderman, The Final Inch, Saving Pelican 895 and One Last Hug.
