Individual Kid Meeting: A Collaborative Intervention Framework at the Carle Auditory Oral School

Listening and spoken language intervention for children who are deaf or hard of hearing is multi-faceted and relies on the expertise of many different professionals including early interventionists, teachers of the deaf, speech-language pathologists, audiologists, and otologists. Inter-professional collaboration can often lead to more effective and efficient intervention. However the real life challenges of limited time, scheduling difficulties, and lack of protocols for collaboration make this a challenge that is faced by many intervention teams. At the Carle Auditory Oral School (CAOS) educational teams for children who attend the program have been following the Individual Kid Meeting framework for more than five years. Team members meet on a weekly basis to discuss progress, determine goals, and identify any challenges experienced by the child and/or family. Even though this framework was developed for young children who are learning listening and spoken language, it is applicable to children with diverse communication modalities and educational teams. In this presentation, the Individual Kid Meeting (IKM) framework, along with its essential components will be discussed. Two case studies will be shared to demonstrate how IKMs facilitated learning and growth of two former students at CAOS. Presenters will share insights they have gained over the years and how the IKM framework has evolved. Participants will have the opportunity to engage in practice IKMs, and discuss how they might implement this framework in their intervention. Videos, handouts, and interactive learning activities will be used in this session.

Mary Willis, MS, CCC-SLP, Speech-Language Pathologist – Mary obtained her bachelor’s degree in speech and hearing sciences from Bradley University in 1982 and her master’s degree in speech-language pathology from Florida State University in 1984. Mary has specialized in services for children with hearing loss since 1986; she joined the Carle team in 1996.

Uma Soman (), Carle Auditory Oral School, uma.soman@carle.com;
Uma Soman is an educator of students who are deaf, LSLS mentor, and deaf-education researcher. She received her doctoral degree from Vanderbilt University in 2017, through the National Leadership Consortium in Sensory Disabilities Fellowship (2010-2014), her Masters in Education of the Deaf from Smith College/Clarke School for the Deaf in 2002., and is also Listening and Spoken Language Specialist Auditory Verbal Educator (LSLS Cert AVEd). Dr. Soman is the Outreach Coordinator at Carle Auditory Oral School in Urbana, IL, and works with students who are deaf or hard of hearing their families, and their educational teams in mainstream school environments. She also trains and mentors professionals pursuing listening and spoken language specialist certification in USA and India. Dr. Soman’s research focuses on language, academic, and social outcomes of children who are deaf or hard of hearing. She is an active member of Alexander Graham Bell Association, and OPTION Schools.

Danielle Chalfant (), Carle Auditory Oral School, danielle.chalfant@carle.com;
Danielle Chalfant, M.A., CCC-A, is a teacher of the deaf, audiologist, and the Director of Carle Auditory Oral School. She has a Bachelors degree in Deaf Education from Mac Murray College and Masters degree in Audiology from the University of Minnesota. For the past 19 years, she has worked with children and families who attended the CAOS program. Danielle has been a strong advocate for numerous children who are deaf or hard of hearing and their families.

Sarah Tanner (), Carle Auditory Oral School, sarah.tanner@carle.com;
Sarah Tanner is the academic program coordinator and senior deaf educator at the Carle Auditory Oral School. She got her Bachelors in Deaf Education at Eastern Michigan University and her Masters in Early Childhood education at Eastern Illinois University. Sarah has taught children who are deaf or hard of hearing and are learning listening and spoken language for 15 years in public schools and specialized deaf education programs. Sarah has been a mentor to first-year teachers, and served as a cooperating teacher for deaf education students at Illinois State University. Sarah is passionate about working with children who are deaf or hard of hearing and experience additional challenges.
