Hear to Learn: Evidence-Based Tutorials for Clinicians and Families

Early identification and management of children who are deaf or hard of hearing is critical for optimizing child developmental outcomes. Parents, however, experience challenges accessing specialized services because of existing shortages of professionals with expertise. To address this shortage, Utah State University offers an interdisciplinary listening and spoken language (LSL) training program for graduate students in audiology, speech-language pathology, and deaf education. Students learn specialized assessment and intervention skills for working with young children who are deaf or hard of hearing and are learning to communicate using listening and spoken language. Graduate students participating in the USU-LSL program receive funding support through a personnel preparation grant from the Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP). A component of student training includes participating in parent education and development of resources for our Internet-based resource center, Hear to Learn (www.heartolearn.org/). Video tutorials are one aspect of the website, and are developed to help parents learn critical information, reinforce information learned from their providers, and to help them effectively teach other caregivers. The tutorials on this website provide ease of access to information that supports effective practices for language acquisition and development in the home environment. The resources are in both English and Spanish. Tutorials are presented with clear, concise readability so that clinicians, educators, and parents can each utilize these resources, regardless of expertise. Caregivers are encouraged to review and ultimately implement these strategies with their children in everyday activities. These tutorials, created by a collaborative team of those who are passionate about helping families and their children succeed, will be useful in maximizing language acquisition and development in all contexts. This poster presentation will provide an overview of the evidence-based tutorials, types of tutorials offered, and describe upcoming new releases focused on strategies to support listening and spoken language within every day activities.

Karen Muñoz is department head and professor of audiology at Utah State University in the Department of Communicative Disorders and Deaf Education. She is also associate director of the National Center for Hearing Assessment and Management. Her research focus is in the area of childhood hearing loss.

Renee Lucero is currently a faculty member in the Listening and Spoken Language Graduate Training Program, a division of the Communicative Disorders and Deaf Education Department at Utah State University. Her interests include working with culturally and linguistically diverse families and implementing listening and spoken language practices in the school setting.

Brittany is currently a graduate Deaf Education student in the Listening and Spoken Language Graduate Training Program at Utah State University. She completed her undergraduate degree at USU. She grew up in Heber City, UT. She worked previously as an SLT in the Tooele County School District and is excited to help kids with hearing loss and their families.
