Caregiver Perspective on Pediatric Hearing Loss and Compliance with Amplification

To examine the consistency of pediatric hearing aid use as it correlates to caregiver knowledge of hearing loss and audiologic management. The RFK Children’s Evaluation and Rehabilitation Center in Bronx, NY serves more than 11 million people, of which roughly 33% were born outside of the US. One third of these residents also live at or below the poverty level and are considered high-risk and underserved. Literature review suggests limited publications focusing on the caregiver perspective of children with hearing loss in this diverse demographic. A goal of this study is to obtain subjective and objective information regarding what factors can improve hearing aid compliance and the parental understanding of hearing loss. We plan to assess these factors by creating a survey designed to target caregiver perspective and knowledge of the child’s hearing status. Information obtained from the survey will be compared to hearing aid data logging to determine if a correlation exists between parent understanding and hearing aid compliance. Clinical experiences and the hypothesized results will help promote education and advocacy for caregivers’ understanding of auditory disorders and associated psychosocial aspects of pediatric hearing loss. These methods emphasize using a family-centered approach in a care-coordinated, interprofessional environment, which is especially critical when serving a pediatric population with multiple disabilities. Future directions could cater to the needs demonstrated by the subjective and objective findings by supporting the creation of an aural rehabilitation plan for this diverse population.

  • To better understand parental/caregiver perspective and understanding of their child's hearing loss.
  • To determine what caregiver factors lead to better compliance with hearing aids.
  • To identify ways in which counseling, parent education, and aural rehabilitation can best cater to our population.
