Informatics Project: Electronic Health Information Exchange for Diagnostic Audiology

National and state EHDI programs have been working for years to develop and implement the transfer of hearing screening data from EHRs to state EHDI programs to reduce duplicate data entry and improve timeliness of reporting. Those same reasons have prompted Oregon’s audiology community to look to the state EHDI program to identify a solution to extract and send diagnostic audiological data from their EHR to EHDI. As an Informatics Training in Place Program (I-TIPP) fellow through Strengthening Health Systems through Interprofessional Education (SHINE), Oregon EHDI Data Quality Coordinator, Meuy Swafford, led an Informatics project that focused on interoperability for electronic health information exchange of diagnostic audiology data. The goal of the project was to identify a solution that eliminates the need for audiologists to report separately to the State EHDI information system. This poster presentation will provide an overview of the project and address the outcomes and next steps for Oregon EHDI. The poster will include information on 1) data standards for diagnostic audiology services, 2) findings from interviews with audiologists and how diagnostic data are captured in their respective EHR systems, 3) options for data reporting, and 3) identified challenges in implementing health information exchange for diagnostic audiology data.

  • Describe data standards for diagnostic audiology services
  • Discuss challenges in implementing health information exchange for diagnostic audiology reporting
  • Xxplain the difference between case reporting versus detailed reporting
