Feasibility and Outcomes of Performing Head Start Hearing Screening Programs

Head Start performance standards require that Head Start or Early Head Start programs provide screenings to identify concerns regarding participants developmental, visual, auditory, behavioral, motor, language, social, cognitive, perceptual and emotional skills (45 CFR 1308.6(b)(3). The Kennedy Krieger Institute Audiology LEND program is working with local Head Start programs to provide hearing and middle ear screens for all of the children participating in Head Start in Baltimore County, Maryland. A total of 253 children were administered hearing screenings. The children ranged in age from 3 to 5 and were tested at one of ten Head Start locations. The screenings consisted of pure tone screens or measurements of distortion product otoacoustic emissions and tympanometry. Pass/fail rates for pure tone audiometry, tympanometry, and DPOAEs will be reported as a function of age of the participants. The feasibility of performing a large number of screens outside of a typical audiology clinic setting will be discussed. Children failing the screens were referred for medical evaluations and audiological follow-up as appropriate. Efforts to coordinate outcomes with the MD-EHDI program will be presented.

  • 2) Participants will be familiar with pass/fail rates that might be expected for screening a pre-school age population of children enrolled in Head Start
  • 3) Participants will be familiar with challenges in coordinating outcomes of hearing screening programs with EHDI programs

Mobolaji is a 4th year LEND Audiology trainee at the Kennedy Krieger Institute in Baltimore, Maryland. She is enrolled in the Au.D.doctoral program at the University of Texas at Dallas.. Mobolaji has a Master of Science in Human Development and Early Childhood Disorders from the University of Texas at Dallas and a Bachelor of Science in Human Development and Family Studies from Wisconsin University.

Amy Gaskin (), Kennedy Krieger Institute, Gaskin@kennedykrieger.org;
Amy is the Director of Audiology at the Kennedy Krieger Institute. She has worked as a pediatric audiologist for over 20 years. She received a B.S. in Hearing and Speech Science from Towson University and an M.A. in Audiology at the University of Maryland. She also received an Au.D. from Arizona School for Health Sciences.

Joseph Pillion (), Kennedy Krieger Institute, pillion@kennedykrieger.org;
Dr. Pillion received his BA from Western Michigan University and his MA and Ph.D. from The Ohio State University. Dr. Pillion completed a post-doctoral fellowship in audiology at Kennedy Krieger from 1982 to 1984. He was Senior Audiologist at Kennedy Krieger Institute before becoming the Clinical Manager of Audiology in 1996 and the Director of the Department of Audiology in 1997. He is also an assistant professor in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
