Updates in Federal Education Policy
Federal education policy is always evolving. In the past year we have seen efforts to shrink Medicaid coverage of health services provided in schools and elsewhere, roll back education regulations and policies, and reduce the scope of the Americans with Disabilities Act. There is talk of shifting public funds to private schools, and the Secretary of Education wants to “rethink” our nation’s public schools. Parents, EHDI professionals, and deaf education professionals need to keep up with current events so that they can better advocate for deaf and hard of hearing children. This presentation will describe and explain the potential impact of the latest federal education policy.
- 1. Attendees will be able to identify the process through which Medicaid funds school services and what impact Medicaid has on schools.
- 2. Attendees will be able to identify the general steps that must be followed in passing, modifying, and repealing regulations.
- 3. Attendees will be able to identify efforts to roll back the Americans with Disabilities Act and the impact this would have on deaf and hard of hearing individuals.

Barbara Raimondo, Esq. is the Executive Director of the Conference of Educational Administrators of Schools and Programs for the Deaf (CEASD). She was associated with the American Society for Deaf Children for 12 years, first as a board member and later as a staff member. She also has worked as a staff attorney at the National Association of the Deaf. She has been a board member and board president at the Maryland School for the Deaf. She received her law degree from George Mason University. She and her husband are the parents of two deaf adults.
