“OMG - On My Game! A Teen Athlete’s Perspective on Life with Cochlear Implants”
When parents learn via Universal Newborn Hearing Screening and follow up testing that their baby has a severe to profound hearing loss, they undoubtedly have many questions, fears, and concerns about the impact of that diagnosis on their child’s future. This workshop, presented by a 15 year old teenager whose bilateral severe/profound hearing loss was identified as a newborn, will recount one family’s journey from diagnosis to the present through the eyes of the teenager. After participating in a recent leadership development experience at a summer camp for children with hearing loss, the presenter became more interested in the specifics of his own journey and the cochlear implant technology that has provided him with access to hearing and spoken language. He will share his perspective on the impact of early diagnosis and amplification/cochlear implantation and the role of early intervention and school-based services. He will also share his beliefs about how specific features and capabilities of his cochlear implants have contributed to his hearing, social, and educational successes and why he feels it is important to share his successes with other parents and professionals.
- Participants will celebrate the successful results of one active teenager’s early diagnosis, cochlear implantation, and auditory-verbal and speech therapies.
- Participants will be able to explain specific cochlear implant features and how they are meaningful to a young cochlear implant recipient.
- Participants will gain an understanding of how teenagers with hearing loss may provide encouragement and hope for families of babies who are newly diagnosed with hearing impairment.

Jonathan was diagnosed with a severe/profound SNHL at birth. He received his first cochlear implant at 12 months of age, and was implanted in the second ear when he was 5 years old. Now an active 15 year old high school freshman, Jonathan plays on the varsity men’s soccer and basketball teams and plays drums in his high school band. Jonathan enjoys sharing his cochlear implant experience with parents and others considering cochlear implants.
