Learning Language: A Multisensory, All-Inclusive Social Playgroup for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children and Their Parents Enrolled in Early Intervention in Illinois
A model program where children who are Deaf/Hard of Hearing (DHH) have opportunities to interact and play with hearing children in a community playgroup. This model program is active in Chicago, Illinois where the playgroup is implemented by a team of qualified professionals comprised of a Teacher of the Deaf, Speech-Language Pathologist and Deaf Mentor. The team coordinates activities that incorporate listening skills, speech and language, sign language and Deaf cultural competencies. Parents are active participants which allows for informal parent support and education. In addition, school-readiness is addressed as children learn how to attend in a group, take turns, and share. Participants will receive agendas for a year of weekly activities and shown examples of social skill developmental checklists.

Jane has over 25 years of experience of working with children who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing. She earned her Bachelors of Science in Special Education with focus on Deaf and Hard of Hearing from Illinois State University and a Masters in Early Childhood from Governor's State University. Jane has been an active provider in Early Intervention in IL as a Developmental-Hearing therapist since 1993. She currently serves as the Deaf Educator for the Cochlear Implant team at University of Illinois Chicago where she coordinates and implements family-based playgroups.

Kaia Feggestad

Kaia Feggestad earned her Bachelors of Science in Communicative Disorders from University of Wisconsin-Madison and her Masters shortly thereafter in Speech-Language Pathology from University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. Kaia has worked in a variety of settings including a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), early intervention, outpatient clinics, and in schools. She also has had experience working with bilingual Spanish families. Kaia has her certification to work with children in the Illinois Early Intervention program. She earned a graduate certificate program in Listening and Spoken Language Development with Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children with Illinois State University in 2016.
