Determining the Effectiveness of the Case Management Module in the Iowa Statewide EHDI Database

In an attempt to reduce loss to follow-up and to improve rates of entry into early intervention, the Iowa Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) Program uses a case management module in its EHDI database. The module is used to store information on hearing-related events and track correspondence between Iowa EHDI staff, various providers, and caregivers. This study addresses how the case management module has been used by hearing health care providers and investigates whether the module’s evolution from 2010 to 2014 has affected lost to follow-up rates and compliance with the JCIH’s 1-3-6 timeline. This was achieved by analyzing the various modes, reasons, and results of correspondence for both infants with confirmed hearing loss and infants who were lost to follow-up. Early analysis indicates that the use of the case management module is a contributing factor in the reduction of lost to follow-up rates and can be an asset in facilitating communication between EHDI staff, hearing health care providers, and caregivers.

  • Describe the purpose of the case management module in the Iowa EHDI database.
  • Identify elements in the case management module that affect lost to follow-up rates.
  • Determine whether the use of the case management module affects compliance with the JCIH's 1-3-6 timeline.
