Getting in the Door: How we can Close the Early Intervention Loss-To-Follow Gap

Early intervention loss-to-follow-up numbers are higher than we want them to be, and it’s a challenge we all face. We’ve seen success in ensuring infants are screened and identified before the 3-month mark, but we’re still losing families. We’ll discuss how families get lost in the process, the barriers families face, and the solutions we’re employing to get children appropriately amplified and enrolled in early intervention before they are 6 months old. We’ll talk about our experience in helping parents navigate a multi-agency early intervention enrollment process, new early intervention provider rules that can impact a child’s access to necessary language interventions, our successes and the lessons we’ve learned from the families we can’t seem to catch. BEGINNINGS for Parents of Children who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing is a private, non-profit agency that leverages our flexibility as a private entity to meet families where they are and provide the support they need when they need it. We’re reviewing our role in this process and looking to improve the numbers on loss to follow-up. Learn what we’re doing to see if these strategies can be employed in your state.

  • Participants will learn about the barriers that families face after their child is diagnosed.
  • Participants will recognize how we professionals sometimes create those barriers.
  • Participants will discover new ways to help parents and family members navigate the challenges to achieve success and enroll in early intervention by 6 months.
