Overcoming Obstacles: Navigating the Management of Children with Hearing Loss and Congenital CMV

Congenital Cytomegalovirus (cCMV) and its characteristics pose one of the greatest threats to undiagnosed hearing loss in children. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one out of every five babies with cCMV will have long-term health conditions, such as hearing loss. Although hearing loss is common in children with cCMV, the characteristics, severity, progression, and onset for each child may vary. Hearing loss can occur unilaterally or bilaterally, progressively or late-onset, and from mild to profound in severity. The diverse impact of cCMV causes a higher risk of hearing loss going undetected. Currently, Florida does not have a state-based audiological monitoring protocol for cCMV. The risk of not having mandated state monitoring protocols can lead to progressive hearing loss going undetected in children. The monitoring protocols that do exist vary by state, and there is no consensus on strategies to help overcome and avoid the risks of late identification of hearing loss in children with cCMV. The demonstration of these case studies will aim to highlight the variability of the hearing loss profile in children with cCMV. These case studies will exemplify the importance of early intervention and describe barriers to diagnosing hearing loss in children with cCMV. This poster will additionally identify obstacles and the related countermeasures that are present when diagnosing hearing loss in a child with cCMV. This poster will list strategies for preventing loss to follow-up that can be implemented in clinical practice.

  • The participants will be able to describe the importance of early intervention in patients with CMV.
  • The participants will be able to identify barriers in diagnosing children with CMV.
  • The participants will be able to list strategies for preventing loss to follow-up.
