Newborn Hearing Screening & Diagnostic Services in Guatemala

Guatemala is a country in Central America with a population of over 17 million. There is one audiologist in the country, who has trained technicians across the country to provide basic audiologic services. Newborn hearing screenings have been very limited due to lack of access to technology, supplies, and training. Guatemala has one of the highest birth rates in Latin America resulting in approximately three babies with hearing loss born every day. Audiologic services are provided through a private clinic, Centro de Audición (CEDAF), and through a non-profit foundation, Smiles that Listen. Over the past decade they have been working to improve access to hearing healthcare for all ages, especially newborn hearing screenings (NBHS). In June of 2023, a team of 5 audiologists from Children’s Hospital Colorado (CHCO) traveled to Guatemala to donate equipment, including five auditory brainstem response (ABR) and otoacoustic emission (OAE) systems. A week of training was provided, including hands-on practice. This poster will discuss the history and progress of NBHS in Guatemala, the impact this additional equipment will have, and the future challenges that they still face on their journey towards universal NBHS and earlier identification and management of hearing loss.

  • The participant will be able to identify 3 barriers to universal newborn hearing screening in Guatemala.
  • The participant will be able to list 2 benefits the new equipment will have.
  • The participant will be able to list 3 strategies for expanding newborn hearing screening in Guatemala.
