Establishing Relationships in Inherited Cases
There are many times where families begin working with a new professional: New professionals enter the field, professionals change positions, or by parent request. In these cases, both parents and professionals have preconceived ideas of how that relationship will proceed. This can lead to frustration and miscommunication between professionals and parents.
“In a family–professional partnership approach, multiple outcomes are possible.” (Keen, 2007) Focusing on establishing trust at the beginning of the relationship can increase the effectiveness of coaching, teaching, and advice. Parents are experts in their child’s history and needs. Utilizing the parent’s knowledge will help professionals identify opportunities to build on previous knowledge and new skill development.
In this presentation 1) Professionals will be able to identify first steps in taking over cases. 2) Professionals will have strategies they can use to set up conversations with parents to build rapport.
