Newborn Hearing Screening: Collaborating with Midwives in Colorado

Families who choose to have their newborns at home with a midwife have had unique barriers to newborn hearing screening, historically. While homebirth makes up a small percentage of births in Colorado, the lack of understanding related to this population has created a disparity for these families. The impact of collaborating with midwives has improved access and follow-up for homebirth families. Colorado Midwives and birthing centers are required to either screen babies for hearing loss or provide information to parents on where to obtain an infant hearing screen. This presentation focuses on the collaboration and building a network of support for families and midwives in Colorado. This project was brought forth by midwives in Colorado as a way to reduce lost to follow up among homebirth families. It was implemented through support from Colorado School for the Deaf and Blind, NorthStar Audiology, Colorado Department of Health and Environmental and Colorado EHDI.

  • Participants will demonstrate a cultural awareness of working with midwives and homebirth families
  • Participants will identify barriers in the homebirth community to accessing newborn hearing screening.
  • Participants will define current activities in Colorado to address homebrith communities access to newborn hearing screening.
