Newborn Hearing Screening: Getting Back to Zero

Data from the Centers for Disease Control in 2019 indicated that Oklahoma had a greater than 50% loss to follow-up rate following newborn hearing screening. During the initial days of the shutdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Hearts for Hearing began exploring ways to improve this statistic in the state of Oklahoma. Fast forward several months - In October 2021, Hearts for Hearing began screening babies at two Oklahoma birthing hospitals. Nearly two years later, we have grown the program to include more than 8 birth centers, screened more than 20,000 babies, and have maintained a zero loss-to-follow-up rate. This presentation will explore the mindset behind this change and the strategies that influenced change. It is our hope to share a proof of concept that can be considered in other states in the United States so that no child is left behind.

  • Participants will identify three components of a successful newborn hearing screening program.
  • Participants will identify two barriers to beginning a newborn hearing screening program.
  • Partipants will identify two strategies for successful collaboration with state EHDI programs.
