Families Learning ASL on Zoom: The Good, The Bad and The Beautiful

Since COVID, in person early intervention services moved online to continue offering support to families with young deaf children. With growing support for online services, pre and post COVID (Hopkins, 2012, McCarthy et al., 2021; Nelson et al., 2022), programs that are continuing the practice of offering services online, it is important to ensure that online services are effective. This session shares strategies developed during a longitudinal study providing ASL services to hearing parents learning ASL with their young deaf children between 2-4 years of age. ASL was taught to these families online due to COVID. Join our session to learn about research related to providing early intervention services online. Our session will also support the EHDI community in identifying and applying practical strategies that work when teaching ASL to families with young deaf toddlers online.

  • Discuss research related to providing early intervention services online
  • Identify at least three practical strategies that work when teaching ASL to families with young deaf children Zoom
  • Apply at least three Zoom strategies when teaching ASL to families with young deaf children online.
