A Routine-based Approach to Remote Microphone Technology in the Home

It is well known that contributing factors such as noise and listening at a distance may present challenging listening environments. The remote microphone may be available to help optimize difficult listening environments. Within the birth to 3 year old population, this technology is underutilized due to a variety of factors. We will discuss what remote technology is, how it can be beneficial for mitigating some of the effects of distance and background noise, offer strategies for how to use this technology in everyday routines, and provide troubleshooting tips related to remote technology. It will be recognized that typical auditory development and speech and language development occur by learning to process speech in noise. The purpose of this presentation is to discuss specific routines in a child’s natural environment where incidental learning may be more challenging, and to provide strategies and ideas for optimizing incidental learning, auditory skill development, and speech and language development while using this technology when available. In collaboration with families, EI providers, and clinical pediatric audiologists, this presentation will share resources and experiences with using remote microphone technology in the home.

  • Families and providers will learn what remote microphone technology is and define signal to noise ratio.
  • Participants will identify routines that may be optimal for a remote microphone system and strategies for promoting auditory and language development.
  • Families and providers will learn how to pair, verify streaming, and troubleshooting steps with the remote microphone technology.
