Adventures of a Deaf* Playgroup

Playgroup time is an opportunity for Deaf* children to be surrounded by a rich visual environment free of language and cultural barriers. What does a Deaf/ASL playgroup look like? In this workshop, a Deaf-hearing team will walk you through a typical day in an ASL playgroup. From playtime, to cooking, to circle time and more, participants will see how playgroups can be structured and the goals behind particular approaches. Methods to maintain access and respect for all languages will be discussed, as well as the role of hearing staff working within Deaf space. As a hearing person, how can you practice effective allyship? As a Deaf person, how can you forge relationships with families in the face of linguistic and cultural barriers in this setting? How can a Deaf-hearing team open doors for families to make well-rounded decisions about their child’s language planning? How do Deaf role models fit into a family’s personal journey? Can all of this, and more, be brewing during a playgroup time? Yes!

  • Participants will describe the language, cognitive, and social objectives in a Deaf/ASL playgroup
  • Participants will list strategies and techniques used in playgroups to facilitate visual attention, transitions, and support language development
  • Participants will analyze the role of hearing staff working within Deaf space to create linguistically and culturally safe interactions
