Sensory Processing Differences in Children with Hearing Loss: Increasing awareness in order to increase a child’s success in accessing and developing language.

We all process a multitude of sensory information throughout our day and at times we all seek or avoid sensory input. Having a thorough understanding of a child’s sensory processing can greatly improve the quality of parent-child interactions and speech and language development. Over the past 12 months the therapists at the Listen Foundation have been working closely with and learning from an OT who specializes in very young children with sensory processing differences. Through this collaboration we have increased our knowledge and use of sensory activities and effective strategies in sessions. In addition, we have also expanded our view of the role sensory processing plays in the children/families we serve. We often we think of a very active toddler bouncing off the walls as a sensory seeking child. But what about our really calm and very quiet children? These children are often struggling with speech and language. We will discuss the various components that make up our sensory system and share and discuss activities the family can incorporate throughout their day and strategies early-intervention providers can implement into sessions to help regulate young sensory systems. Understanding sensory processing in children and teaching families to implement effective strategies can improve audiology visits, increase speech production and auditory comprehension and of course can increase attention to task.

  • 1. Participants will be able to state 3 child behaviors associated with tactile, vestibular and proprioceptive sensory systems.
  • 2. Participants will identify 3 strategies for each of the above sensory system that can be utilized throughout the day.
  • 3. Participants will create a plan to put into practice 3 activities that feed the sensory system and help regulate behaviors.
