Deaf and Hard of Hearing Training Modules for Family Resource Coordinators and Early Support Providers

A priority of the Washington State Department of Health, Early Hearing Detection, Diagnosis and Intervention (EHDDI) program is to increase the number of infants identified as deaf or hard of hearing (DHH) who receive timely and appropriate early support (intervention) services. Based on an assessment completed by the EHDDI Advisory Group in November 2021, it was determined that infants who are DHH are not always receiving appropriate early support services due to service coordinators not having the specialized knowledge and skills to work with children who are DHH and their families. Service coordinators are responsible for overseeing the implementation of the Individualized Family Service Plan (IFSP) and coordinating with agencies and service providers. In Washington, these individuals are referred to as Family Resources Coordinators (FRCs). FRCs do not routinely receive training about DHH specific resources, communication opportunities, and services available in Washington State. In order to best serve infants who are DHH and their families, the EHDDI Advisory Group identified the following training priorities for FRCs: • Specialized providers and services, • Bias awareness, and • Knowledge building. The EHDDI program worked with a diverse group of partners to create an online training module for each of these content areas. This presentation will discuss how the three training modules were created, the content in the modules, any challenges encountered, and feedback from training users.

  • Understand the process used to create online training modules.
  • Identify learning objects that were developed by the training development team.
  • Learn about challenges that occurred during the project and how they were addressed.
