Inclusive Family Support

Families of deaf/hard of hearing children ages birth to three benefit from inclusive support as they start their journey. Families benefit from meeting deaf/hard of hearing adults early on, unbiased information about communication choices, support from other parents, connection to community organizations, and continued support along their child’s journey. The purpose of this presentation is to provide education and overview about the deaf/hard of hearing family support program offered at Children’s Hospital Colorado. This family support program is unique in that it is offered in a medical/clinical setting. The family support team includes a teacher of the deaf and two family consultants (both of whom are deaf/hard of hearing and wear different technology). The family support program highlights the value of including deaf/hard of hearing adults in the clinical process for children who are deaf and hard of hearing. We will discuss opportunities and programs available to families of deaf/hard of hearing children ages birth to three. These opportunities include: telehealth support, support during audiology visits, meeting with deaf/hard of hearing adults, baby group, and toddler group, among others. We will also discuss the value of the family support team in providing inclusive family support. Those attending this presentation will learn how this unique family support team model can benefit their organization and leave with ideas for implementation on their own teams.

  • Describe the benefit of including deaf and hard of hearing adults in the clinical process?
  • Explain how to provide inclusive family support when discussing communication modalities/opportunities?
  • Discuss the benefit of providing diverse support opportunities to families.
