Beneath the Surface: Listening Fatigue in Young Children

In addition to supporting language in children who are deaf and hard of hearing, providers in the EHDI system recognize the importance of supporting strong socio-emotional development. Part of developing strong socio-emotional skills is recognizing the impact of listening fatigue. Listening fatigue is a significant contributor to the overall health and wellbeing of young children who are deaf and hard of hearing. While the impact of listening fatigue can be significant, it is still a newer concept and many parents of deaf and hard of hearing children are unfamiliar with this term. Listening fatigue can be “invisible” and deaf and hard of hearing children can appear to be like a duck on the surface, doing “just fine”, however, others can be unaware of how furiously they are paddling beneath the surface to keep up. Throughout the presentation, the presenters' personal experiences with listening fatigue will be explained and emphasized. Listening fatigue will be discussed through the lens of trauma in terms of physical and psychosocial impact. Chronic listening fatigue is a stressor, which we are now starting to understand has significant mental and physical health impacts. Additional topics will include helping parents to identify signs of listening fatigue and strategies for supporting young deaf and hard hearing children.

  • Participants will be able to describe listening fatigue and its effects on young DHH children.
  • Participants will be able to state strategies for supporting young children in the area of listening fatigue.
  • Participants will understand the connection between listening fatigue and trauma and co-regulation
