Collaboration between Public Health, Education Professionals, and a Family-Based Organization to Support Families identified through Universal Screening for Congenital Cytomegalovirus (CMV)

Congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) is the most common infectious cause of birth defects and the most common cause of non-genetic sensorineural hearing loss in children in the United States. About 1 out of 5 babies born with congenital CMV will develop long-term health problems, such developmental or motor delay, vision loss, seizures, or hearing loss. In February 2023, Minnesota became the first state in the nation to screen all newborns for congenital CMV, which will result in identification of approximately 220 children per year with the infection. Congenital CMV is an established condition with high probability to affect development. Therefore, effective follow-up and support for children identified with cCMV depends on close collaboration between many partners. In this presentation, we will tell the story of partnerships between public health, education/early intervention, and a family-based organization to provide education and outreach to early education providers and families in several ways. 1) We will discuss the development of a webinar series for education and childcare professionals that provides information about special considerations for children with cCMV, characteristics of children most likely to be referred to early intervention, as well as practical ways that school districts can support children with cCMV on individualized family service plans (IFSPs). 2) We will describe the acceptability and effectiveness of a book study as a method of learning and reflection about cCMV for early intervention practitioners and special education leadership. 3) We will outline targeted educational presentations to priority partners, including regional early hearing detection and intervention (EHDI) educational teams, regional low incidence facilitators, educational audiologists, and special education coordinators. 4) We will describe the development and early implementation of a cCMV-specific parent-to-parent support program.

  • Participant will be able to describe one way to promote awareness, understanding, and compassion for children with congenital CMV and/or other conditions with a high probability of resulting in a developmental delay.
  • Participant will be able to discuss a model for parent-to-parent support of a child with congenital CMV.
  • Participant will be able to list 2 methods to reach professionals working in educational settings with information about congenital CMV.
