Nature as Interventionist: An Experiential Guide to Learning

In the last 125 years, the pace of life rapidly increased as we have mechanized, digitalized, and drastically reduced our personal connections to the natural world. This relatively recent and rapid change has a significant impact on our bodies and our brains ("Last Child in the Woods, Richard Louv)--especially for young deaf and hard-of-hearing children using technology and working with multiple interventionists. Research has accumulated, demonstrating ways in which time in nature can lift mood, reduce cognitive fatigue, facilitate sensory integration and development, prompt communication and linguistic development, and encourage gross and fine motor skills. As people who live and work in a field with significant interaction with new technologies, nature exposure may be a poignant balancing point for our job satisfaction, as well as a means of interdisciplinary intervention that supports overall health and well-being for deaf children and their families. This workshop will experientially explore potential nature-based interventions and their utility for multi-dimensional growth.

  • Participants will name and discuss at least three ways that nature exposure supports health and well-being.
  • Participants will identify and discuss at least three developmental (i.e. linguistic, social, etc.) areas in which nature exposure can stimulate growth.
  • Participants will personally experience nature-based interventions that support interdisciplinary (linguistic, social, motor, emotional, etc.) growth.
