Collaboration of our Family Based Organization (FBO), Family Connections for Language and Learning and Parent to Parent of Pennsylvania – How, Why and Can this be Replicated in Other States?

At Parent to Parent of Pennsylvania, when someone asks what we do, we say we empower and support parents throughout our great state. We connect them with families of children & adults with special needs or disabilities who’ve had similar journeys. We have been providing this support for over 25 years in Pennsylvania. We also recognize in Pennsylvania that families who learn that their child is deaf, hard of hearing or deaf/blind often have many questions about having a child with a hearing difference and are unsure of the next steps they need to take. They need very specific unbiased support and information on all of the communication opportunities available to their family. Pennsylvania’s Family Based Organization (FBO) Family Connections for Language and Learning, an independent affiliate program of P2P of PA, consists of a team of trained experienced parents of children who are deaf, hard of hearing or deaf/blind and specially trained deaf/hard of hearing adults. These mentors help families as they navigate the Early Intervention system and explore communication opportunities for their child. Services specific to their child’s hearing difference are provided at no cost to families through FCLL. This session will focus on how our FBO and P2P of PA work together to provide seamless support for families of children who experience hearing differences. Participants will learn the “nuts of bolts” of what these two programs offer, how we work collaboratively to serve families across their children’s lifespan, and why having access to the focused and more intensive supports of FCLL is imperative for families of our youngest children.

  • Identify 2 key guidelines of each program.
  • Examine 3 similarities between programs.
  • List 2 ways the programs collaborate.
