What if...and why not

Families make a multitude of decisions when they have a new baby in their life. When they learn their baby has differing hearing levels they face a new world of possibilities. By reflecting back on our personal family experience and sharing the current support of Early Intervention and Family Connections for Language and Learning, available to families in our state, we hope to help other states and families better support the infants and young children experiencing differing hearing levels in their state or family. We hope our journey exemplifies that families and specifically their children can have fun on this journey and get the support they need to train for life in events like hurdles, sprints and long distance runs as they grow and change with their child. Families that get support, awareness of opportunities, education, and a team who is well trained can help their children grow, explore, engage, succeed, and exceed expectations. Plan to leave this session asking what if and why not?

  • Identify three key decisions families make following the birth of their child with a hearing difference.
  • Generate a list of activities for family engagement opportunities that enhance bonding and family joy,
  • Explain the impact of modeling positivity on the journey with the family of a child with hearing loss.
