Increasing Flexibility of Approach for Language Acquisition in D/HH Children

This presentation will focus on how rigid thinking can be risky when it comes to language acquisition for children who are Deaf or hard of hearing (D/HH). The main argument of this presentation is that professionals who work with D/HH children should be flexible and open-minded in their approach to language acquisition with this population. The presentation will explore how a rigid approach might be harmful to these children, as well as how we can transform our practice to be more inclusive, flexible, and open to new ideas. It will include research and evidence-based information to support its education, as well as strategies for practical implementation.

  • Participants will be able to state three effects of an incomplete first language acquisition on linguistic abilities
  • Participants will be able to describe how rigidity in approach affects first language acquisition in D/HH children
  • Participants will be able to identify three ways to increase flexibility of approach for language acquisition in D/HH children

Kimberly Sanzo is a speech-language pathologist who works with D/HH children with language deprivation. She received her B.A. in Psychology and in Communication Sciences and Disorders from the University of Vermont in 2010 and her M.S. in Speech-Language Pathology from Gallaudet University in 2012. She is currently a doctoral candidate for an SLPD. She has given presentations on a variety of topics related to bilingualism, language acquisition, and language deprivation in Deaf children, and she is dedicated to changing the way that SLPs understand and work with D/HH children.
