What makes a parent a successful advocate for the child who is deaf/HOH? What helps a professional understand what a parent is going through? Legal protection is available for parents of children with disabilities; sadly not all parents are aware of it. This presentation offers both parents and professionals the basics to successfully work with schools for their child’s educational future. Protection of the parent/school relationship is the most important aspect of successfully advocating for a child with disabilities. Professionals can easily educate parents in this model of parent/school relationship building without jeopardizing their position. IDEA protects parents; it’s up to the parents to protect their relationship with school personnel. Presentation covers both IDEA and Advocacy in a whirlwind 1 hour tour. This training covers basic IDEA, understandable explanations of the laws that protect children who are Deaf/HOH. It truly hits on protecting the parent school relationship because as we know once a parent becomes defensive and argumentative the meeting can go bad. My training's help parents to understand who the members of an IEP team are and that they deserve to be heard as the parent does. It strongly focuses on working as a team and leaving demands at home. This also helps professionals get the training from a parent perspective. As I’ve developed my training my skill has become more professional but at the end of the day I’m a parent first who deals with her own difficult district issues. This training has been both locally in IL and nationally presented. Q&A and examples will be abundant in this session.
- Participants will gain understanding of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act.

Andrea Marwah is the advocacy/IDEA expert for Illinois School for the Deaf. She is President of Illinois Hands & Voices, responsible for reaching parents in Illinois who have children who are deaf or hard of hearing through outreach and education. As Commissioner on Naperville's Advisory Commission on Disabilities she worked on compliance under ADA. Through her position as president of IL Hands & Voices, she works closely with the EHDI (Early Detection Hearing Loss Intervention) program in the state of Illinois providing outreach to service providers. Andrea has also been published both locally and nationally on topics relating to deafness, advocacy and IDEA. After attending North Central College she obtained her BA degree in Psychology. She is first and foremost a mother to three children and wife to Ajay. Her daughter Samantha is profoundly deaf. She lives in Illinois with her family.
