How Working Memory Impacts Counseling and Service
Our approach to counseling and service provision can greatly impact how well information is applied outside of the intervention environment. Research has shown that 40-80% of information communicated by a healthcare provider may be forgotten immediately, and of the information that is recalled about half is remembered incorrectly. In this session, presenters will consider a model of working memory along with a model of behavior change and how it applies to informational counseling on hearing, hearing loss and hearing loss solutions. By the end of the session, participants will walk away with practical strategies and tools to improve memory retention of the listener while explaining hearing and hearing loss to others, reading and explaining an audiogram as well as, explaining the hearing loss solution for children with various types of hearing loss and audiograms.
- Objective: Explain a model of working memory that defines how we hear, see and store information
- Objective: Describe a process-based approach to facilitate change in the behavior of others
- Objective: List at least three interactive learning experiences to facilitate retention of learned concepts in an informational counseling session
