The Impact of Adverse Childhood Experiences on Communication Development of Children Who Are Deaf or Hard of Hearing
Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are traumatic events experienced by children between the ages of 0-17 years (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2020). Early adversity can negatively impact communication development in children, especially those who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH). Positive childhood experiences (PCEs) can lessen the harmful effect of ACEs and serve to promote communication development. Interprofessional collaboration is important when providing care to children who are DHH experiencing adversity. Practitioners are invited to reflect on their own early experience while examining case scenarios of young children who are DHH to identify those services and supports which may enhance communication development.

- Reflect on one’s own lived experiences in relation to the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) Questionnaire.
- Analyze two family case studies and consider evidenced based interventions to support communication development.
- Explain the value of collaboration in supporting intervention of children who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) experiencing adversity.
