Advocating for Unique Educational Needs
Often families are placed in a unique situation an unable to advocate for their child’s unique educational needs. This can be obtaining services to be included in the Individualized Education Plan, obtaining the services of qualified service providers, and a free appropriate public education.
While there are many publications available on the process itself and how to appeal the process, it is helpful for parents to have a better understanding of the IEP team and how they come to their recommendations, as well as some strategies for obtaining the services the parent feels the child needs.
There are also definitions parents need, some of which are included in various publications. What are related services? Special factors? What’s the difference between due process and mediation?
Presenters will discuss the importance of baseline and annual testing as a way to determine the child’s annual progress. They will also provide anecdotes from their own experiences as parents advocating for their children who are deaf.

Sarina Roffé is the parent of a native cuer, past president and current Executive Director of the NCSA. An award-winning journalist, she is the subject and author of many articles on deaf education, parenting and the importance of English language in the development of literacy skills. She has presented before national audiences. Her presentation style is interactive, combining a professional presentation with personal anecdotes.

Lisa A. Weiss is a mediator and a public school policy expert. She provides direct instruction in self advocacy, work adjustment training, and communication access as a private educational interpreter with a family based cooperative School to Work Alliance Program called Solid Ground Denver.
