Supporting Families Who Say No to Early Intervention Services for Their Infants and Toddlers who are DHH

The Family Leadership in Language and Learning (FL3) has developed resources for families and professionals on the topic of early intervention. This presentation will focus on insights from providers who engage with families who may not or do not choose to enroll in early intervention services and to explore further understanding of these families compared to families in the past. Results from a 2019 Roundtable discussion at the Western Regional Early Intervention Conference with almost 30 representatives from eight states providing input on this unique population will be shared. As a result of this information, resources have been developed for families which are useful in sharing between parent-to-parent communication and those discussing the benefits of early intervention in state and territory EHDI systems. Information gleaned from this group included: reasons families decline early intervention; unique population considerations (i.e. unilateral, deaf plus); factors for underrepresented communities; differences in new generations of parents/children with the availability of technology for information gathering.

  • The participants will glean useful knowledge from a report derived from a roundtable discussion with early intervention providers at the 2019 Western Regional Early Intervention Conference to help inform the development of resources for parent-to-parent communication and EI to family support.
  • o Participants will have access to and be prepared to utilize the product developed for the population addressed in the presentation.
  • o The participants will understand the strategies/activities covered under the federally funded cooperative agreement – The Family Leadership in Language and Learning (FL3) to provide support for families who may not or do not choose to enroll in early intervention services.
