Leading Change Together: Results of a Multi-Stakeholder Evaluation of the EHDI Chapter Champions Program

During the 2018-2019 year, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) EHDI program conducted a multi-disciplinary, mixed methods evaluation of the EHDI chapter champions program. The goal of this evaluation was to gain insight into stakeholder perspectives on the effectiveness of the EHDI chapter champions program in supporting the goals of the AAP EHDI program, with the ultimate purpose of strengthening the AAP EHDI program. The results of the EHDI chapter champions evaluation have systems level implications for pediatricians, state EHDI coordinators, families of children who are deaf or hard of hearing, nonphysician clinicians and other stakeholders. Results from the evaluation offer valuable insights and specific evidence-informed recommendations to enhance the EHDI system. This breakout session will describe and discuss the EHDI chapter champions evaluation. Presenters will discuss practical strategies that are being implemented to address opportunities identified in the evaluation and the impact those strategies can have on the EHDI system. In discussing the results of the evaluation, emphasis will be placed on describing recommendations identified and the role each stakeholder group can play in strengthening the EHDI system. Participants will be provided with a worksheet and discussion questions to identify partners and tools within their own states to strengthen the EHDI system in response to the results of the evaluation. Through peer-to-peer learning, participants will identify resources and strategies they can implement to strengthen the EHDI system and strategies that are already being implemented within states. Faculty will also be available to discuss and brainstorm implementation strategies.

Müge Chavdar is the program manager of two projects between the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Maternal and Child Health Bureau. These projects are the National Resource Center for Patient/Family-Centered Medical Home and the Early Hearing Detection and Intervention program. Ms Chavdar has worked at the AAP since 2017. Prior to joining the AAP, she completed a Master’s of Public Health in Community Health Sciences with a concentration in MCH from the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Teresa Nold is married to Tim, who is also Deaf and together they have 2 amazing boys. Their oldest son, Isaac, loves to tell them what time it is and if he has somewhere to be. Isaac is Deaf, has multiple disabilities and requires daily support. Caleb, their youngest, is your typical gaming man who is also sensitive and caring. Teresa was raised in a Deaf family- her parents and siblings are Deaf. Early in Isaac’s life, Teresa remembers a comment that was made to her regarding raising Isaac: “Be ready- you’ll always be advocating”. That statement remains true to this day. For their family, they feel that equal access means a good quality of life- whether it is in the areas of independent living, employment or education. Teresa has always worked in the field for people with disabilities. Over the years, she was on many different boards and committees- locally, statewide and nationally- such as the South Dakota Coalition for Citizens with Disabilities, South Dakota Early Hearing Detection Intervention Advisory (EHDI) committee, EHDI National Conference Planning committee, South Dakota Deaf-Blind Advisory Committee, Vice-President of the South Dakota Association of the Deaf (SDAD)- and more. She also is a Partners in Policymaking graduate, a LEND parent trainee, and In 2019, Teresa was a Tribute to Women nominee. Teresa recently began to dive into state policies for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community. Two years ago, she worked with several folks to pass the LEAD-K (Language Equality Acquisition for Deaf Kids) bill in South Dakota after the SDAD selected this as one of their priorities. She was appointed as Chair of this committee. Fast forward to June of 2020, Teresa and her family made the long trek moving halfway across the country from South Dakota to California. Teresa is now the new LEAD-K Family Services Manager. Anyone who knows Teresa will tell you that she always has a smile on her face. She has great sense of humor and is spunky, crafty, and compassionate.

Julia Hecht (), New Mexico Pediatric Society , julia.hechtmd@gmail.com;
Julia L. Hecht, MD is a pediatrician and New Mexico Chapter Champion. She has focused her medical career on the health and well-being of deaf and hard of hearing children, and children from Deaf families. She received her Doctor of Medicine degree from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. She studied ASL and Deaf culture at Gallaudet University in 1984-5 and 2018. She received a CATCH grant in 2003 to support the implementation a medical home for Deaf and Hard of Hearing children and CODAs in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She was the Medical Director and school physician at the New Mexico School for the Deaf from 1998-2009. Currently, Julia works in advocacy and education at the local, state, and national levels.
