Neuro-Linguistics 101 - A primer for EHDI providers

A basic understanding about brain development in deaf children is essential for medical clinicians and front-line providers in order to provide optimal care and assist families in shared-decision making. This presentation will be a digest of the relevant scientific literature on first language acquisition and bimodal bilingualism from the perspective of brain development and linguistics. Data from brain imaging studies of deaf individuals as well as other research methods will be presented. Then, in an open dialogue format we will discuss its implications for clinical decision-making regarding deaf and hard of hearing children.

  • Participants will have a basic understanding of the role of language in deaf children’s brain development.
  • Participants will have a basic understanding of language acquisition research to help guide clinical decisions in the medical home.
  • Participants will have the opportunity for open dialogue about the provider’s role in shared decisions about language.
