Yes You Can Cue 30 Million Words: Building a Child's Brain with Cued Speech

Parents play a pivotal role as the primary providers of the early language learning environment for their children with hearing loss. The same is true for parents of children with normal hearing. From the groundbreaking work of Betty Hart and Todd Risley, reported in their book, “Meaningful Differences in the Everyday Experiences of Young American Children” (1995), to the extensive, more recent, follow up work of Dr. Dana Suskind, summarized in her book, “Thirty Million Words: Building a Child’s Brain” (2015), we learn that the quantity and quality of language input from “parent talk” plays a large role, for all children, in building their brains to support optimal learning and achievement. Parents of children with hearing loss would benefit greatly from a system that enabled them to easily and effectively provide unambiguous access to the complete vocabulary, syntax and phonology of the spoken language of the home, in real time, as it is being spoken. There is such a system -- and it is called Cued Speech. The handshapes, placements, and methodology of the Cued Speech system can be learned in just a few weeks -- and "cueing" can be used to enhance any and all benefits the child receives from assistive technology. Cueing can begin immediately upon diagnosis, laying a language foundation prior to cochlear implantation or hearing aid trials. Use of Cued Speech should be continued during and after the critical time of prime neuroplasticity that occurs from birth to three. Cued Speech accelerates language acquisition and enables age-appropriate literacy levels. Because Cued Speech is a closed system and is easy to learn, it would be practical to enhance EHDI programs nationwide to include Cued Speech training for EI providers and parents. The system will be defined and demonstrated as part of this presentation.

  • To understand and explain the relationship of quantity and quality of language input to optimal brain development
  • To understand and explain how Cued Speech provides a way to easily and unambiguously convey the complete vocabulary, syntax, and phonology of a spoken language, naturally, as it is spoken
  • To learn and describe, using a handshape chart for reference, all components of the Cued Speech system for American English and how to put them together to cue words

Sandy has used and advocated for Cued Speech for 27+ years. She is the co-creator of CuedSpeech.org an online educational platform for learning Cued Speech. She has taught workshops, presented at conferences and, in 2012, organized a professional development seminar in Chicago featuring renowned experts in CS from around the world. Sandy helped found a Montessori school with a Cued Speech program for educating deaf children ages 0-15 together with their hearing peers. During her time as a Regional Director on the board of the NCSA, Sandy edited and co-authored the booklet, Open Doors: Options in Communication and Education for Children Who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing; Oticon 1998.
