The Perks of Parent to Parent Support and Communication Choices: Real life sharing – before and after Guide By Your Side Parent Panel

Parents who find out their child is deaf or hard of hearing are faced with numerous decisions they must make. One of the most important yet daunting is that of communication. Depending on who a parent speaks with, will depend on what advise they receive. This panel will show the importance of early referral to a parent-based support organization such as Guide By Your Side. Panelists will talk about what their initial experience about making a communication choice was before they were paired with a Parent Guide through the IL Guide By Your Side Program and what they felt after they began working with a Parent Guide. The major difference was that CHOICE became CHOICES and they were empowered to make the choice that was right for them at that time and the ever-important knowledge that it’s okay to change if that initial choice isn’t working.

  • Attendees will hear from parents who benefited from parent to parent support from the start
  • Attendees will learn how parents receive unbiased communication information
  • Attendees gain insight on the parent perspective and what it's like to raise children who are DHH
