Analysis of the Timeline from Diagnosis to Intervention in Children with Auditory Neuropathy Spectrum Disorder
Auditory neuropathy spectrum disorder (ANSD) is a disorder characterized by a disruption in the transmission of neural signals from the sensory cells of the inner ear to the brain. Prevalence studies suggest that approximately 7 to 10% of children with permanent hearing loss have ANSD.
Audiologic management of children with ANSD is particularly challenging due to the unique nature of this disorder. Specifically, due to the abnormality of neural transmission in children with ANSD, auditory brainstem response (ABR) testing cannot typically be used to estimate thresholds and guide intervention in this population. In addition, the presence of co-existing health conditions and developmental delays in many children with ANSD increases the age at which reliable behavioral testing can be performed. For these reasons, children with ANSD often have a complex timeline for diagnosis and audiologic management. This study was designed to analyze this timeline in children followed by UNC Hospital's Pediatric Audiology Program to identify specific factors that may complicate or facilitate timely audiologic management.

- Describe the heterogeneity of this clinical population.
- Discuss practical strategies for facilitating timely intervention.
