Many parents experience a grief response upon learning their child has been diagnosed with hearing loss. Family engagement and involvement are a leading indicator of success with early intervention efforts. Parents who are experiencing grief may struggle to fully participate and engage in therapeutic activities. In this session participants will be exposed to several theories on grief and will learn to identify many potential triggers of grief responses. It is important for early interventionists to understand that grief is a normal response to events that are perceived as potentially traumatic. The concept of resilience through grief will also be explored, including information about how family support provides the components that define resilient people.

  • identify signs that someone is experiencing a grief response and recognize indicators of complicated grief
  • list the three components of resilience through grief
  • describe three example of how active grief responses effect progress through early intervention

Susan Rolinger, MA Director of Extended Learning Iowa School for the Deaf / Iowa Educational Services for the Blind and Visually Impaired As the mother of a profoundly deaf daughter, Susan understands the challenges faced by children with hearing loss and their families. Susan’s professional focus shifted from mental health counseling in a clinical setting to D/HH family support. As a follow-up program coordinator for Iowa EHDI, Susan served professionals and families. She was coordinator of the Iowa Hands & Voices Guide By Your Side (GBYS) program and currently serves as a national GBYS trainer. Susan coordinates statewide experiences for students and their families which are based on the expanded core curriculum and works with a team overseeing the quality of educational services for Iowa's D/HH students. She has authored presentations and facilitated workshops at the state and national level on a variety of mental health and parenting topics.
