In order to address possible knowledge gaps or perceived knowledge gaps, in the area of communication development of young Deaf and Hard of Hearing children, a crosswalk was developed. The crosswalk consists of matrices that highlight areas in which the Listening and Spoken Language Specialist (LSLS) certification from AG Bell and the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC) Deaf and Hard of Hearing (D/HH) appear to share content and knowledge. The matrices were developed to find areas of commonality related to teaching children who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing. The LSLS and CCTC D/HH Standards represent different frameworks, however, there are many shared competencies represented in both documents. The matrices highlighted competencies in which the shared competencies were not as strong. Those areas were used to develop a professional development series to address hearing and hearing technology, auditory functioning, spoken communication and strategies of listening and spoken language development. Data from the professional development series, along with the series format and content will be shared. Preliminary data from the professional development consists of pre and post surveys related to teacher confidence on workshop content, and development of new and strengthened instructional strategies to support communication development.

Shawna Goldhammer is a currently working Deaf and Hard of Hearing Itinerant teacher that services students in the North Orange County SELPA and working with Orange County Department of Education (OCDE) to create and implement a professional development training series for professionals serving the D/HH population ages birth to 5 years old. Using the crosswalk created by Dr. Janice Myck-Wayne, OCDE created a 5 part professional development series. This training series consists of 5 full day trainings for the 2015-16 school year.

Dr. Janice Myck-Wayne is an Associate Professor/Coordinator of the Early Childhood Special Education program at California State University, Fullerton. She has over 25 years combined experience working as a classroom teacher, administrator, researcher, and professor. Dr. Myck-Wayne was commissioned by Orange County Department of Education (OCDE) to study the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC) Deaf and Hard of Hearing Teaching Standards and the Listening and Spoken Language Domains standards set by the Alexander Graham Bell Association of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing that lead to certification of Listening and Spoken Language Specialist (LSLS) professionals. Dr. Myck-Wayne provide OCDE a crosswalk to review and use to develop a professional development training series for the PIES (Parent Infant Education Services) committee representing Orange County Early Start partners. The intent of the PD series is to create legally defensible programming for D/HH student ages birth to 5.
