Tennessee EHDI Data Quality Assessment and Improvement
Tennessee (TN) Early Hearing Detection and Intervention-Information System (EHDI-IS) and the Newborn Hearing Screening (NHS) is now an expected standard in the continuum of care for all in-state births. The EHDI-IS documents unduplicated data on the delivery of hearing screening, diagnostic follow-up, and early intervention services and maintains data quality of patient-level hearing and demographic information as well.
In collaboration with EHDI NHS program, a data quality monitoring system was developed in TN EHDI-IS to identify inconsistent, incomplete, and invalid records in the hearing data for timely error corrections. The core data quality dimensions used for data quality assessment include uniqueness, completeness, consistency, accuracy, validity, and timeliness. TN EHDI-IS includes 100% of in-state births. After the introduction of data quality checking in 2013, only 334 births were found to be missing one or more values, such as child sex and maternal age, race, and education level in 2013, compared to 990 births with missing or incomplete demographics in 2012. The proportions of births with contradicting or invalid information for screening methods and results and the date of test have been reduced by about 10%. The primary challenge in data quality control is to spread the process chain of data checking and error correction to all birthing hospitals and audiologists. TN EHDI-IS programmatic goals and functional standards would be successfully achieved when all TN birthing hospitals and audiologists can report and track hearing screening and follow-up information online after the establishment of TN Electronic Web-based Neometrics data system.

Fenyuan Xiao have been working in the TN EHDI TSI/IS program as a senior epidemiologist for more than 5 years.
His main duties is to assess newborn hearing screening coverage, audiologic follow-up and early intervention services, to help minimize the loss to follow-up by identifing the missing and retrieving their updated contact information, to help establish EHDI-IS data system by data linking, data quality control, and data management and analysis, and to provide data related and epidemiological supports to the TN EHDI NHS program and its partners.

Jacque Cundall

Jacque Cundall is currently the Newborn Hearing Screening Coordinator in Tennessee. She has worked with Tennessee Department of Health in various leadership roles for approximately twenty years. Prior to that, Jacque was a public heath nurse in Mississippi, Arkansas, Missouri, and Washington. She has served as President of the Directors of Speech and Hearing Programs in State Health and Welfare Agencies (DSHPSHWA).
