A Review of Preschooler Performance with FM/Roger

Purpose: 1. To analyze parent subjective report of the use of Roger system in home, 2. To analyze objective use of FM/Roger systems in noise testing. Introduction: The Marion's Way Preschool is a preschool for deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) 3-5 year olds and has been running for several years in Denver, CO. FM and Roger systems have been an integral part of the preschool, with their constant use inside and outside of the classroom. Several years' data on the use of FM and Roger have been compiled and will be analyzed as a LEND project. Methods: 1. Pre- and post- FM/Roger subjective questionnaires were given to the parents of the 6 DHH enrolled in the preschool. Their answers will be analyzed for such purposes as to search for trends and to indicate performance of FM/Roger in-home. 2. Using the 6 DHH children as their own controls, their performance in speech-in-noise testing with and without the FM/Roger will be analyzed. Results: It is expected that the subjective questionnaires will indicate increased speech understanding in the home environment. It is expected that the children will perform better in the speech-and-noise testing when the FM/Roger is used. Discussion: The purpose of this evaluation is to review the use of the FM/Roger systems in a variety of settings across multiples years of preschool classes. Results of this endeavor will inform us on the uses of FM/Roger in preschool classrooms and in the home environments.

Alison Meagher is a fourth year AuD student at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Her research interests include speech/language development in children with developmental disabilities and hearing loss as well as bilingualism. She is a past chapter president of the Student Academy of Audiology (SAA) and a past member of the national SAA Humanitarian Committee. Her fourth year externship is at the Marion Downs Center.

She is an Associate Professor of Audiology at the University of Colorado where she is the Coordinator of the Pediatric Audiology LEND MCHB training grant, which supports AuD students and post-doctoral audiologists to expand their expertise in pediatric audiology.
