Title: 'Considerations for ASL and Spoken English Bilingual Development in Young Children Who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing: An Overview' Track: - Keyword(s): ASL Spoken English Bimodal Bilingual Learning Objectives: Describe an ASL/ spoken English bilingual approach to educating young deaf and hard of hearing children. Discuss the research demonstrating the benefits of a bilingual approach in two modalities for young children who are deaf or hard of hearing with varied characteristics. Describe the planning process and strategies involved in implementing an ASL/spoken English bilingual approach in school and at home. Abstract: This workshop will provide participants with an overview of considerations for facilitating American Sign Language (ASL) and spoken English bilingual development with young children who are deaf or hard of hearing (including children with cochlear implants). This interactive workshop will explore the evidence documenting the benefits of bilingual development in two modalities. It will include concepts integral to the language planning process and strategies essential to establishing an environment (at home and school) that values both languages and modalities to meet the needs of children with diverse language and communication characteristics. Rebecca Stevener - Co-Presenter,POC Laurent Clerc National Deaf Education Center      Credentials: M.S., CCC-SLP      Other Affiliations: DC License, ASHA certified       Rebecca Stevener is a speech-language pathologist who has worked with students who are deaf or hard of hearing from birth through high school, both at the Laurent Clerc National Deaf Education Center and in general education settings, for 10 years. She received her bachelor’s degree in communication sciences and disorders from Baylor University in 2003 and her master’s degree in speech-language pathology from the Callier Center at the University of Texas in Dallas in 2004. Currently Stevener is a PhD student in the Hearing Speech and Language Sciences Department at Gallaudet University.       ASHA DISCLOSURE: Financial - No relevant financial relationship exist. Debra Trapani - Primary Presenter,Co-Presenter Laurent Clerc National Deaf Education Center      Credentials: Principal, Kendall Demonstration Elementary School       Debra Trapani is the principal of Kendall Demonstration Elementary School at the Laurent Clerc National Deaf Education Center. She has worked as a parent-child educator, a teacher of students from preschool through secondary school, a literacy specialist, and an administrator of the Delaware School for the Deaf and statewide programs in Delaware before coming to the Clerc Center. Growing up deaf, Trapani was a student in several deaf education settings in California before graduating from a school for the deaf.
