ABSTRACT INFORMATION
Title: 'Factors Associated with Late Hearing Screening and Late Diagnosis of Hearing Loss in Early Childhood'
Track: 6 - Follow-up, Tracking and Data Management
Keyword(s): Newborn Hearing Screening, Linked data, Surveillance, Late Diagnosis
Learning Objectives:
  1. To outline causes and risk factors of hearing screening after one month of age and completing diagnosis of hearing loss after 3 months of age .
  2. To discuss plans and strategies to reduce the number of hearing screenings after one month of age and complete diagnostic evaluations of hearing loss after 3 months of age.

Abstract:

The ability to hear plays a crucial role in the development of speech, language, and cognition in early childhood. Previous studies showed that children with hearing loss who enrolled in intervention services before 6 months had significantly better academic achievement and language development than counterparts that enrolled after 6 months. The Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EDHI) program has effectively identified many cases of early childhood hearing loss in recent years. The program recommends that all newborns be screened by 1 month of age, preferably by hospital discharge; diagnosis be completed by an audiologist by 3 months of age for infants who failed screenings; and intervention services be received before 6 months of age for infants identified with hearing loss. Hearing screenings and diagnoses completed after recommended timelines are considered barriers to the effectiveness of EHDI programs. The objective of this study is to use 2011-2013 surveillance data from the Louisiana EDHI data linked with birth records to define causes and factors related to hearing screening after one month of age and/or completing diagnosis after 3 months of age. Findings from the study may be useful in developing appropriate plans and strategies to meet the goals of early hearing screening and diagnosis in the state. We will present results of the study and also discuss plans and strategies to reduce late hearing screening and diagnosis during the presentation.
