Title: 'Exploring the Use of Bone Anchored Implants in Children Birth to Three'
Track: 2 - Audiological Services
Keyword(s): bone anchored implants, diagnostics
Learning Objectives:
  1. Identify appropriate candidates for use of a Bone Anchored Implant (BAI) Compare typical pre- and post-fitting outcomes Describe challenges for use in the birth to three population
  2. Compare typical pre- and post-fitting outcomes
  3. Describe challenges for use in the birth to three population

Abstract:

Bone Anchored Implants (BAI) are considered an appropriate amplification option for a variety of hearing levels including conductive hearing loss and single sided deafness. A literature review undertaken as part of a LEND traineeship revealed that limited data is found regarding application of this type of device with infants under 3. Using chart review, a data base of available diagnostic and qualitative information available about infants currently using BAIs under the age of three in a large pediatric hospital was developed. Results from a pilot project of eight infants diagnosed through newborn hearing screening will delineate type/degree of hearing loss, etiology, concomitant diagnoses, pre-and post-fitting results, early intervention services received and speech/language progress. Additionally, parental observations about incorporating use of a BAI on a softband into daily routines and rituals will be emphasized. Findings will be used to educate multidisciplinary team members about use of this technology including potential candidates, benefits vs limitations and challenges involved in integrating a BAI into daily life in children under three.
