Abstract:

Why should a child who is deaf or hard of hearing begin group therapy at age two? Our Center’s focus is to place children in a typical classroom as early as possible in order for them to participate appropriately in a social and academic setting. Therefore, commencement of group therapy often begins at age two. Participants in group are age matched based on their developmental, listening, and spoken language skills. Group therapy follows a thematic unit schedule based on children’s experiential knowledge which includes holidays, seasons, and events. A theme is repeated for two weeks in order to ensure repetition of targeted goals and objectives. Sessions follow a specific routine that incorporates songs into circle/introduction time, movement, snack, book and/or situational story, and art/craft. Graduate student clinicians are able to facilitate group in an effective manner due to a child to clinician ratio of 1:1. A typical group meets 1-2 times per week for 1-2 hours and includes 3-5 children who are deaf or hard of hearing. Parent participation is often utilized during the session; however, specific carryover activities incorporating the theme are reviewed and sent home on a weekly basis. Participants will learn effective ways to execute group therapy at age two. Participants will learn ideas for themes, activities, songs, and home practice that will promote listening and spoken language development.

      Velvet Buehler is a Clinical Professor in the Department of Audiology and Speech Pathology at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. She holds dual certification in Audiology and Speech Pathology. Mrs. Buehler has provided aural-habilitation services to children who are deaf or hard of hearing and their families for 28 years. She supervises practicum for graduate students in Audiology and Speech Pathology in the areas of aural-habilitation, parent counseling and education, literacy, pediatric audiology and auditory processing disorder. Mrs. Buehler serves on two cochlear implant teams providing pre/post cochlear implant evaluations and treatment. She has presented at numerous regional and national conferences Mrs. Buehler is a certified trainer for the National Educators of Children with Cochlear Implants. She is a certified NOMS clinician. Mrs. Buehler recently served 6 years on the ASHA steering committee member for Division 9: Hearing and Hearing Disorders in Childhood.
