Abstract:

Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities Program (LEND) through the Institute for Community Inclusion at Boston Children’s Hospital (BCH) is an interdisciplinary training for health and counseling professionals, and families improving the knowledge in working with children with various types of disabilities. The LEND Boston curriculum is comprised of leadership and training seminars, mentorship opportunities, interdisciplinary program observations, community outreach involvement, a policy conference and family visits. These unique experiences encourage a multidisciplinary approach to pediatric patient care, particularly for patients with disabilities. In conjunction with the general training received by each LEND fellow, externs participate in audiology focused opportunities, such as a visit to the Newborn Hearing Screening program in the state of Massachusetts and attending the Disabilities seminar in Washington, DC where trainees are given the opportunity to lobby for audiology related laws. These visits allow the externs to understand the systems that exist at the state and federal level, as well as actively advocate for issues that will advance and improve the profession. The audiology externship at BCH fosters professional growth through LEND training and in clinical experience. Externs participate in diagnostic and rehabilitative audiology for various patient populations. The Down Syndrome Program at BCH is an interdisciplinary team approach to the management of health care for this particular patient population. Members of the interdisciplinary team include but are not limited to audiology, psychology, physical therapy and speech language pathology. As an extern, one is given the opportunity to test these patients audiologically in the clinic as well as observe the families’ process of seeing each individual discipline on the team through shadowing. This experience allows externs to see both perspectives of the team approach, the professional’s side and the family’s.
