Abstract:

Early Intervention services have a positive impact on the communication development of children who are deaf and hard of hearing. The earlier services begin the better. Early intervention occurs at an optimal time for neural synchrony. When families choose a listening and spoken language approach, the greatest results follow when early interventionists empower caregivers with tools and strategies to feel confident in developing their child’s communication skills. For this project, I explored these topics by reviewing recent literature, conducting a survey of current early intervention professionals, interviewing deaf education professionals, participating in online webinars, and shadowing an early interventionist. Conference participants who view this poster will be able to identify key findings including strategies for successful early intervention sessions, the importance of collaboration, and the impact that gaining access to sound early as well as receiving early intervention services can have on early language development. The influence on school readiness and social/emotional well-being as well as information regarding reasons for gaps in services for children who are deaf and hard of hearing will also be addressed. The poster will include recommendations on improving services and outcomes through evidence-based practices and strategies.
