Abstract:

Recent data between the years 2008 and 2012 demonstrate that the state of Iowa is close to meeting the goal of screening all newborns in the state. A growing number of babies born outside of a hospital setting, however, represent a disproportionate number of those infants who do not complete the screening due to a variety of factors. Educational outreach to medical professionals involved in the pre- and post-natal care of such infants is complicated by state-specific concerns regarding licensure and fears of unnecessary medical intrusion. A heterogenous group of direct entry midwives, certified registered nurse midwives, doulas, and certified licensed midwives attend these births in Iowa, but do not generally seek information in the same publications or attend the same continuing education events as other EHDI stakeholders. To assess the current state of hearing screening in this population, Iowa EHDI records were combed for the years in question and a review of the literature regarding out-of-hospital birth trends and standards was completed. The authors met with midwives involved in state advocacy and came to recognize a general lack of information regarding the newborn hearing screening (and possible sequelae of congenital hearing loss) among this cohort of birth attendants. A set of materials aimed directly to these professionals and the families they serve was developed and tailored to many of the stated concerns. We hope such a mailing will act as a point of contact for those professionals who wish to learn more about hearing and early communication. The messaging and format of the materials, which include a color poster and one family’s story regarding how the newborn hearing screening impacted their lives, encourage both the parents involved and the caregiver to become active participants in ensuring the screening is completed. Those materials will be available for review with the proposed poster.
